Four quadrants: If the torque and speed of the motor are respectively taken as the horizontal and vertical coordinates to form a coordinate system, then the four quadrants in the coordinate system represent the four kinds of industries in which the motor works: positive force lifting, negative force lifting, positive force lowering, negative force lowering.

The direction of speed of DC motor is determined by the direction of armature voltage and magnetic field. General DC motor speed regulating device, the direction of the magnetic field is constant, that is, the direction of torque is controlled by the direction of armature voltage.

If your DC motor needs to be able to operate in four quadrants, then you need a DC motor governor to be able to adapt to the motor four quadrant operation conditions, you have to choose a four quadrant governor. For the four-quadrant governor, the thyristor is paralleling forward and backward to form three full control Bridges, so a total of 12 thyristors are used to produce different armature voltage and current directions. If your motor only needs to operate in one direction and torque direction, then you can use a single quadrant.

So whether you use one quadrant or four quadrant depends on the operating conditions of your motor.
